Thousands of Arizonans have died as a result of the COVID pandemic since it began in early 2020, with more deaths reported every week. As a result, many Arizonans are having to deal with their loss and grief alone. Such loss and grief in our community must not be ignored or forgotten.
Covid has tragically claimed the lives of men, women, and children who were once husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, sons and daughters, sisters and brothers. The loss of a spouse or partner, and children, has caused many people to struggle to cope with life without them. Women have become widows, men have become widowers, and children have been left orphaned.
Last year, I lost my youngest son, Daniel, to COVID. When my son died, I felt as if I had died as well. I was overcome by unimaginable grief, leaving a void in my heart. It took some time for me to heal from my loss and grief and resume my life. I made a promise to myself that my son’s death would not have been in vain. Having made this vow, I dedicated myself into turning my personal tragedy into a life-changing mission, in which I founded the Healing Hearts Wellness Center, a non-profit organization devoted to supporting those who have lost loved ones to COVID to heal and resume their lives, with the comforting feeling of knowing they are not forgotten or alone.

The Healing Hearts Wellness Center will give those of us who have lost loved ones to COVID a place to connect and interact with others, in which everyone involved has experienced and is dealing with a similar type of loss, who can empathize and support one another during and after the grieving process. At best, one will be able to listen to shared memories and survival stories about how others dealt with their greatest sorrow – the loss of a loved one. Programs available include grief support groups, youth and child mentorship, social events and group retreats.
Together, as a community, we can help these families and individuals in resuming their lives. Together we can give them a reason to keep the Faith, a reason to not lose sight of Hope, and a reason to know that they are loved, not forgotten, and not alone.
